Due to its open-world design, one of the most important aspects of Genshin Impact is its regions. These new zones provide massive amounts of content and exploration, letting players take on so many new challenges. For this reason, whenever a new region is released, like Genshin Impact 4.0’s Fontaine, hype for the Gacha game skyrockets. However, this level of hype also invites with it a bit more scrutiny when looking at each new area. Plus, with more and more content being added to the game, it’s a lot easier to compare and criticize older and newer Genshin Impact regions. With five regions available now, the world of Teyvat has had a lot of variety in its landscapes and designs. Here is a ranking of all Genshin Impact regions so far.
5. Mondstadt
Being the first region of Genshin Impact, Mondstadt was bound to have some problems. Firstly, while the zone is an excellent introduction to the world of Teyvat, overall, it is arguably Genshin Impact’s most boring region. Between the hilly design and the standard layout of the main city, Mondstadt is by far the least daring zone. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it makes an easier introduction for new players, Mondstadt can be a chore to explore sometimes. That said, on release, Mondstadt was an excellent region and a highlight of Genshin’s open world. As more and more zones were introduced, however, it became more and more apparent that Mondstadt didn’t have much going on. With very few special mechanics, flat layouts, and limited enemies and expansions, Mondstadt is the worst region in this Genshin Impact ranking by a wide margin.
4. Inazuma
Next up, Inazuma was the first new region added to Genshin Impact and took our fourth spot in the ranking. Inazuma, design-wise, is a lot more daring and adventurous than the first two nations, Liyue and Mondstadt. It’s evident that HoYoverse wanted to try something new with this zone and succeeded. Rather than every other region’s usual flat landscape layout, Inazuma is a series of islands, taking inspiration from places like Japan. While this is a visually stunning region, Inazuma does fall short in many other categories. Namely, the format of the islands can make it difficult to explore, even with a Waverider. Plus, some enemies here, like the Kairagi or Rifthounds, are a chore to fight. Sadly, for these reasons, Inazuma’s beauty and unique design are soured by subpar gameplay.
3. Liyue
The second of the two original regions, Liyue, claims our number three spot due to its size and huge amounts of content. Liyue, being the land of the Geo element, is an extremely large mountainous area. The land takes heavy inspiration from China, making for some gorgeous scenery and breathtaking views. Additionally, when it comes to exploration, nothing is more fun than climbing mountains and gliding to far-off locations. It seems that Genshin Impact’s Liyue took advantage of the game’s movement systems better than any other region. Being an original zone, however, Liyue is lacking in unique mechanics and gameplay, though is still fun to explore overall.
2. Sumeru
By the time Sumeru was added, HoYoverse was starting to figure out the good and bad aspects of each zone. Using this new information made the Genshin Impact’s Sumeru region one of the best so far, giving it the number two spot in this ranking. Firstly, Sumeru is the largest region by a wide margin. Though content can be sparse at times, especially in its desert areas, the sheer size and design of the nation are fun to explore. On top of this, everything looks gorgeous and is connected by a strong theme of duality that ties everything together nicely. Plus, Sumeru has some of the most fun mechanics, like manipulating flowers with certain elements or using Dendro Stars to quickly traverse the map.
1. Fontaine
Despite being the newest region, Genshin Impact’s Fontaine still takes the number one ranking, even when compared to more established areas. Fontaine has perfect aesthetic and beautiful areas, like the Court of Fontaine. Additionally, the music of the region is some of the best that Genshin has to offer. On top of all of this, new mechanics like underwater exploration and adjusted swimming are very fun experiences. In the end, Genshin Impact 4.0’s Fontaine is off to a great start. Hopefully, with more time, the region will keep getting better and better.
