One of the most daunting and time-consuming choices in RPGs relies on picking up a preferred combat style or class. When starting your Dragon Age: The Veilguard adventure, you can pick between three of the starting classes. Whether you want to smash things as a Warrior, parry blows as a Rogue, or wreak elemental havoc as a Mage, all of them are great in their own way. However, the early portion of the game takes a while to take off, so picking the best starting class might make your journey a bit easier.
3. Mage
Sadly, Mage is the weakest starting class in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Yet, it isn’t the worst in the game. While this class really shines during the mid and late-game portions of Veilguard, the early hours can be a bit rough. You don’t get access to a lot of things, and the playstyle might seem a bit slow compared to the other ones. However, it is the flashiest class around and one you should consider picking, especially if playing in easier difficulties.
If you decide to go with it, there are many specializations that will make the class reach greater heights. Personally, I think Spellblade is one of the most fun in the game. It scratches that itch of a hybrid melee/ranged fighter. Death Caller is great for those who want to siphon the HP out of enemies, and Evoker falls into your classic wizard-esque playstyle with destructive spells. Again, it is a strong pick, but one that takes a while to reach its full potential.
2. Warrior
Despite being seen as the bulkiest and slowest of the bunch, Warriors are amazing in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Without specializations, they are highly mobile and hit like a truck. Plus, the flying shield à la Captain America is so satisfying to pull off. And while it is a bulwark when facing danger, its gameplay can get a bit old and repetitive. But if you don’t mind, the early hours will be easy for you.
Later in the game, you can choose between Reaper, which is a beefy necromancer of sorts. Slayer, which is a more DPS-oriented version of the Warrior. And lastly, Champion, who is the tank/support class in the game. If all you care about is survivability, then the Warrior is an excellent choice. However, for those looking for a more fast-paced gameplay with added playstyle options, there’s clearly a winner among all Dragon Age: The Veilguard starting classes.
1. Rogue
Undoubtedly, the Rogue is the best starting class in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. If paired with the right faction, you can create a crit machine right off the bat. Plus, out of all three, it is the most mobile class, making it perfect for those who want to try the game’s hardest difficulties or just have a more frenzied gameplay. However, you need to time your parries right, as they play a huge part in the Rogue’s playstyle.
After progressing through the game, you can pick between a Duelist, which is the Rogue’s specialization that focuses on timed parries and evasion. The Saboteur summons all sorts of turrets and traps to control the battlefield. And finally, the Veil Ranger, which is a more ranged-focused class that mixes a bit of magic into its skills. Regardless of the specialization, the Rogue is a great first pick and one that will carry you through the game’s early portions with ease.
Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with these classes. All of them are well-designed and offer unique playstyles for all Rooks. Still, if you just want to breeze through the game, which I don’t recommend as it is better to take everything in, you can just pick Rogue or Warrior to make the slow first act easier. If not, just pick whatever fits your roleplaying style the most and smash, explore, or slice everything that crosses your path.
