Alleged Kroger Message About Sick Workers Has Ohio Residents Reconsidering Where They Shop: ‘That is not corporate policy’

Shocking if true

Workers in Ohio sparked major debate online after a Reddit post alleging that Kroger employees may have felt pressure to come to work while sick began to spread across social media. The claims drew criticism from many users who argued that grocery workers, especially those handling food in deli and bakery departments, should not feel pressured to work while ill due to potential health risks to coworkers and customers.

So now Kroger employees, including those working in the deli and bakery, will be forced to come in when sick??

The discussion first appeared on Reddit’s r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, where a user shared what they claimed was a message from store management about attendance expectations. The story later spread to the r/Ohio subreddit, where many Ohio residents continued discussing the alleged message. Posts about the situation gained several thousand upvotes and hundreds of comments as users debated worker protections, union representation, and Kroger’s workplace policies.

According to the Reddit user, the message was allegedly sent by store managers to employees throughout District 1 of Kroger’s Cincinnati and Dayton division in Ohio. The poster said they could only personally verify the communication within their own district, but believed others may have shared similar notices from other stores.

The user also claimed the United Food and Commercial Workers union, commonly known as UFCW, represented the affected stores. According to the Reddit post, some employees claimed they do not receive accrued sick days under the current system, which led many commenters to worry workers could feel forced to report to work even when sick.

Although the alleged communication was not independently verified, the post quickly prompted broader discussion about conditions faced by retail and grocery workers. Many commenters argued that workers in food-preparation areas should be able to stay home when ill.

The original poster later denied accusations that the story was fabricated for attention online and argued that large corporations often damage their own reputations through their workplace policies and treatment of employees.

Ohio Users Outraged Over Alleged Kroger Message

Reactions online were sharply divided. Many users expressed anger toward Kroger over the alleged policy in Ohio and said they would avoid shopping there if the claims were true. “Guess my immunocompromised self will not be shopping at Kroger,” one user commented.

Others questioned whether the message actually reflected company-wide policy. Some commenters argued the alleged communication may have come from an individual manager rather than Kroger corporate leadership.

“That is not corporate policy and has been debunked. It may very well be a real image of a real employee communication. If someone got this message from their local store, though, it’s from an inept manager who is going against the actual company sick policy,” another user wrote.

Some users also questioned why the union would not challenge the policy if the allegations were accurate. Several commenters claiming to know current or former Kroger employees argued that unions often failed to push back strongly enough against company decisions. “Years back, my little brother worked at the Kroger Distribution Center near Delaware and it was horrible,” one Reddit user said.

The viral discussion has since sparked broader online conversations about labor protections, sick leave policies, and working conditions in grocery stores. As the discussion continued online, neither Kroger nor United Food and Commercial Workers had publicly commented on the specific claims referenced in the Reddit posts.
