Before the 2.0 update in Animal Crossing, you could build inclines on your island to travel around your island and explore. While inclines are aesthetically pleasing, they are also costly, especially for players who do not have a lot of bells. The 2.0 update introduced permanent ladders, an inexpensive replacement for inclines. By the end of this guide, you will learn how to get the permanent ladder DIY recipe in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
How to Get the Permanent Ladder DIY Recipe in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
To unlock permanent ladders in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you must purchase the ladder set-up kit recipe from Nook’s Cranny. When you enter Nook’s Cranny, go to the far right side of the shop and interact with the gardening cabinet. Near the bottom of the list, you will find the ladder set-up kit recipe for 2,000 bells.
Once you have purchased the ladder set-up kit, you can learn the recipe in your inventory to unlock the wooden ladder set-up kit. To craft the permanent ladder, you will need one regular ladder and five wood. If you want to make multiple permanent ladders, you will need to obtain additional regular ladders. You can buy the crafting recipe at Nook’s Cranny for 500 bells if you do not already have it.

You can set up the permanent ladder against cliffsides to easily navigate around your island. To place it against a cliffside, select it in your inventory and choose to set it next to the cliff. The ladder will appear, which you can interact with to climb up and down the cliff. The ladder acts as an alternative to building an incline or using your handheld ladder. Compared to inclines which can cost anywhere between 98,000 to 228,000 bells, a 2,000 bell ladder is much more affordable for anyone that does not want to spend hundreds of thousands of bells.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on the Nintendo Switch.
