MTV’s Teen Mom alum Janelle Evans is speaking out amid her back-and-forth battle with her mom Barbra, over the custody of her son Jace. Taking to her Instagram stories on Friday, October 21, the reality star accused her mom of taking custody of her son and kicking her out. According to her, her mom acted so because she was jealous of a guy she was dating at the time.
Addressing a fan’s comment that implied Barbra was a better fit to be Jace’s guardian than Janelle, the 30-year-old admitted such remarks discouraged her from sharing details about her life, hence her exit from MTV’s Teen Mom. Going further, she advised fans to desist from believing everything they saw on TV or heard from a third party. She added:
“There’s a lot of personal stuff that’s been going on with my family lately, where actually Jace should be living with me.”
Janelle Evans also accused her mom of replacing her with Jace, 13, as soon as she welcomed him. She referenced a scene from the MTV show where her mom criticized her for living n the streets with her then-boyfriend after sending her packing. The mom of three admitted she would never do that to her own kids despite people’s perception of her as a bad mom.
Janelle Evans Slam MTV Show Teen Mom Amid Mom Drama
After dwelling on her custody battle with her mom over Jace, Janelle Evans also touched on her less-than-pleasant stint on Teen Mom. Referencing a scene from the MTV show where she said, “Jace doesn’t need me, he has my mom,” the Teen Mom star revealed she only said those lines because the show imposed it on her under contract. She divulged:
“There was a whole script given to us to read these voiceovers. It was given to every girl… by contract, we had to do that or we would’ve been fined.”
Janelle further stated that she tried convincing them to change the lines, but they declined. Worse still, her MTV contract forbade her from speaking of those terms or saying how she truly felt about her son’s custody. Years later, she could speak freely about it only because the contract had expired.
Recall that the star announced her intention to quit Teen Mom and any other installment of the MTV reality series due to the terms of her contract negotiations. Interestingly, Janelle isn’t the only Teen Mom star to call out the series’ biased treatments.
In September 2022, Teen Mom 2 Devoin Austin slammed the network on Instagram, accusing them of failing to pay his parents after filming several scenes. He also called them out for neglectful treatment in a December post. Kaitlyn Lowry has also slammed the network in the past, citing their portrayal of her as a bad mom. While these allegations against MTV have raised brows on occasions, several cast members have nonetheless found fame through their stints on the motherhood series.
