Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney has addressed the controversy on her mom’s birthday post. The actress finally responded to the uproar surrounding her mom’s 60th birthday “hoedown” party photos. This comes after several fans questioned the attire of guests at Sydney Sweeney’s mom’s birthday.
What Was The Controversy On Sydney’s Mother’s Birthday Post About?
On August 27, Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney shared some controversial pictures from her mom’s 60th birthday celebration. The Everything Sucks star took to Instagram to share a series of photos and a video from her mother Lisa’s Western-themed birthday party. She captioned the jolly post:
“No better way to celebrate my momma than a surprise hoedown.”
The post included a picture of a male guest bearing what fans identified as a Blue Lives Matter design. There was also a video that showed the partygoers wearing red baseball hats.
Her brother Trent revealed in a separate Instagram post that the baseball hats read, “Make Sixty Great Again,” similar to former President Donald Trump‘s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Sydney’s post gained a lot of controversy, with social media users expressing either criticism or support for her family. It also resulted in political debates among social media users.
Did Sydney Sweeney Intend To Draw Controversy With Her Post?
Per E! News, the Voyeurs star later asserted that her mother’s birthday party was simply a birthday party, and it was not her intention to draw controversy.
“You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions,” she tweeted. “Much love to everyone, and Happy Birthday, Mom!”
Meanwhile, the actress’ Euphoria and White Lotus co-star Lukas Gage dropped a comment on her post that read, “Hoedown throwdown.”
Sydney, who was set to star in Marvel’s Madame Webb, grew up in Idaho and Washington state before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager and has never revealed any political affiliation. However, she did express support for the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. “We need to do better. The hate in this world needs to end. #BlackLivesMatter,” she tweeted in May 2020.
