Developers confirmed some days before the release that Tears of the Kingdom would have dungeons, but how many? In the Zelda franchise, dungeons are as common as rupees, and every fan has an opinion. Dungeons have always been a core component of the franchise, and ToK is no exception. Still, many fans were disappointed with BoTW’s dungeon design. So does Tears of the Kingdom deliver?
Are There Dungeons in Tears of The Kingdom?
Tears of the Kingdom has five fully-fledged dungeons, each with its theme, puzzles, and boss. These dungeons grant new abilities, are longer and more involved than in previous games, and will challenge you every step of the way.
Sure, five may not be as many Tears of the Kingdom dungeons as you expected. But don’t let the number fool you; these dungeons are massive, intricate, and chock of secrets. Each is unique, with its theme, puzzles, and boss. Each dungeon also grants players a new ability that they can use to traverse the world and solve puzzles. These abilities tie in with the dungeon’s theme, making them helpful and thematically relevant.
The dungeons themselves are also longer and more involved than in previous games. The lead-up to each one is much more extensive, with puzzles and obstacles that players must overcome before setting foot inside. So, maybe it doesn’t matter if there aren’t that many dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom. It’s a matter of quality over quantity. This not only adds to the overall epic feel of the adventure but also makes each dungeon feel like a genuine accomplishment when you finally conquer it.
Note: Some players believe there are as many as six dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom. But that’s untrue. Instead, there are four Elemental Dungeons and a fifth that splits into Hyrule Castle and the Spirit Temple.
Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
