Swifties have one wild idea that has been officially shuttered. Taylor Swift fans have a theory that they think she is Elly Conway, the writer behind the book that served as inspiration for director Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. But the filmmaker of the Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard blockbuster has finally shut down the idea.
There are multiple pieces to the theory that have fans feeling they were on to something. For one, the author of the book has not been publicly revealed, so people guess she could be the popular musician. The other piece of “evidence” is that Apple bought the rights to the film for a massive $200 million, making people think Conway has to be using a pseudonym and must be someone as famous as the singer. The other two parts are more tied to the icon due to the film featuring argyle sweaters and a Scottish Fold cat, which she notoriously owns two, named Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson.
Argylle Director Matthew Vaughn Speaks Up on Taylor Swift Theory
The director spoke to Rolling Stone to speak up on the popular Taylor Swift theory for Argylle. As the filmmaker is not “a big internet guy,” it was his daughter who went up to him and said, “You never told me Taylor wrote the book!.” It confused him, but then he told her that it was not true. Conway, who is played by Howard in the film, is a real author.
There is a real book… and it’s a really good book. And there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center, and I don’t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned! But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.
Matthew Vaughn on the Taylor Swift theory
The one thing he did relent on was that Taylor Swift did have some inspiration for Argylle in some form. The cat featured is owned by him and his wife, model Claudia Schiffer. They got the Scottish Fold cat due to their daughter’s love for the musician and watching the Netflix documentary Miss Americana.
The upcoming film was penned by Jason Fuchs. Inspired by the name of the novel, it follows Conway (Howard), who is a successful spy novelist. Her world is turned upside down as she is thrust into a real spy thriller situation when it turns out everything she has written has come true, even her titled character. The film also stars Dua Lipa, Sofia Boutella, John Cena, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, and Samuel L. Jackson.
