Ariana Grande‘s new song “The Boy Is Mine” has fans raising their eyebrows. The track, which is featured on the singer’s Eternal Sunshine album, is all about giving in to temptation. Throughout the lyrics, Grande sings about a guy who’s caught her attention. She shouldn’t be falling for him, but she just can’t resist. After looking into the song, fans can’t help but wonder whether it’s about her controversial relationship with Ethan Slater.
Ariana Grande May Have Referenced Ethan Slater On “Eternal Sunshine”
Grande begins the song by saying she’s not the type of person to cause “a scene.” She even calls herself “unproblematic” and “independent.” However, a new guy in her life is causing her to lose her sense of reason. Despite her better judgment, Grande can’t help but fall for him.
Somethin’ about him is made for somebody like me. Baby, come over, come over. And God knows I’m tryin’, but there’s just no use in denying.

The singer goes on to admit she knows she’s in a “sticky situation.” Although she never saw their relationship coming, it’s too late to turn back now since she and her lover both fell hard for each other. She takes “full accountability” for what happened.
Promise you I’m not usually like this. Sh*t, it’s like news to me, to me. But I can’t ignore my heart, boy.

After hearing the lyrics, fans became convinced Grande was singing about Ethan Slater. When news of their relationship broke in July 2023, many labeled the singer a “homewrecker” since they thought Grande stole Slater from his wife and high school sweetheart, Lilly Jay. Up until Grande began dating the Broadway star, Slater and Jay appeared to be happily married. They even had recently welcomed their first child together. However, fans think Slater cheated on Jay once he met Grande through Wicked.
So, is “The Boy Is Mine” about Slater? Grande won’t confirm or deny which of her Eternal Sunshine lyrics are based on her actual life. She previously told the Zach Sang Show:
I say everything and nothing at the same time [on ‘Eternal Sunshine’]. It’s very vague and very specific all at once.
