Last December, Assassin’s Creed became one of the many video game-to-movie adaptations that Hollywood should have left alone. Despite the all-star cast, some great CGI, and the massive fanbase, there were some serious liberties taken with the storyline, which shied away from what made the first game memorable. Due to the movie’s shortcomings and low performance at the box office, there is very little chance Regency and Ubisoft will bring an Assassin’s Creed II to the big screen anytime soon. That’s not slowing down the adaptations, though. Now Ubisoft wants to develop an Assassin’s Creed TV series instead.
In a Reddit AMA this week, the head of content for Assassin’s Creed, Aymar Azaizia, answered questions about we could expect from the franchise moving forward and if there was any possibility for a television series. Azaizia confirmed that there was a TV show was in development, though based on his comments, it still sounds like the show is in the early stages: “It’s like the movie guys, we will take our time to get sure we deliver something we can be proud of, but if you wonder if it’s in our plan…YES.”
Despite Azaizia’s response in the AMA, an Assassin’s Creed show has yet to be formally announced. In November 2016, the CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, revealed the company was discussing the possibility of a TV series with streaming giant Netflix, though it was still vague which Ubisoft franchise was being optioned for the silver screen.
There is more than enough content across the Assassin’s Creed games to produce a successful show for many seasons, not to mention a show will allow for more attention to detail and story that we simply didn’t get from the film. It has also been more than a year since we have had a new installment in the series. That time off gave everyone, the Assassin’s Creed team included, a much-needed break since Ubisoft has been pushing out games in the franchise every year since 2009. Now, however, more information has been emerging about the latest installment in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Empire.
From the Middle East to Italy, and then from New England to France to Victorian London, we have been all over the world with this franchise. But this new title, Empire, reportedly will take us to a setting that’s even more exciting: ancient Egypt. During the AMA, Azaizia was also asked to provide more details about Empire, but he didn’t give anything away about the upcoming title.
With movies, future games, and now a TV show, Assassin’s Creed is not a franchise that looks like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Information about the show is still limited at this point, but stay updated with The Nerd Stash as more details unfold.
