Since its theatrical debut in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar has remained the highest grossing film to ever hit box offices. With the sci-fi adventure film being such a huge success and Cameron stating that he was hard at work on sequels fans have been eagerly awaiting news of when these new films would be arriving. Finally, James Cameron has made an official statement.
At CinemaCon, a gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas, Nevada, James Cameron announced that he has plans to make 4 sequels to his original film, giving the Avatar franchise five films in total.
The second film in the franchise, currently titled Avatar 2, has an anticipated release date of Christmas 2018, with films three, four, and five pegged for Xmas 2020, 2022, and 2023 respectively.
The two main actors from the original Avatar, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldana, have stated previously that they are interested in returning for future films and with James Cameron stating that things are currently entering the production phase the future of the Avatar franchise appears to be, at long last, materializing into a tangible whole.
