Avatar: The Last Airbender fans may finally have something to rally behind. And ironically, it’s not an officially licensed Avatar game from Nickelodeon at all. Pathea Games, the studio behind My Time at Portia and Sandrock, just revealed its new project: The God Slayer, an open-world steampunk fantasy RPG. The game is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, with a release window to be announced.
The God Slayer drops players into an Eastern-inspired metropolis powered by steam tech, qi-imbued machines, and warring factions. You play as Cheng, an ‘Elemancer’ who commands elemental powers — fire, water, earth, metal, and wood. He must embark on a quest to avenge his family and save the people from the Celestials using elemental mastery and skills from ancient scrolls.
Fans are quickly drawing comparisons of The God Slayer to Avatar. Elemental interactions, like water extinguishing fire or freezing enemies with water manipulation, are core combat strategies. And there are a lot of wuxia or Eastern martial arts influences throughout.
“Finally the avatar game I always wanted,” wrote @Godmorz on YouTube, excited.
“We got Avatar’s Creed before GTA 6,” joked @mikeruiz7846.
“This is straight up Avatar the Last Airbender right? This is all of us ATLA fans dream game that’ll be on consoles right?” said @CaliburXL99, surprised and in disbelief.
“Daaaamn!! When he summoned the water to fight the fire guys and put them out, then froze the water, and then bent the earth to run them all over I was hooked!” wrote @tonybailey89. “Yall please take your time on this it looks absolutely fantastic and looks so creative!!”
After all, the bar for Avatar games hasn’t exactly been high, with most entries landing somewhere between forgettable and outright frustrating. The 2006 tie-in was a painfully bland beat-em-up remembered mostly for its easy Achievements. Even PlatinumGames couldn’t rescue The Legend of Korra from repetitive combat and a barebones design.
That leaves the upcoming 1v1 fighter Avatar Legends, due in Summer 2026, as the franchise’s next official hope. Meanwhile, The God Slayer is giving fans a different kind of optimism. If Nickelodeon still won’t deliver the open-world Avatar game they’ve wanted for decades, maybe another studio will.
