If you’re unfamiliar with Larian Studios games, the developers have always allowed players to play their CRPGs as pre-made characters. Said characters can eventually join your party, which is great as well. Yet, for those struggling to create a custom character, the Origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 are perfect, as they have their own stories and builds to make the game easier. If you want to know which Origin characters are coming to Baldur’s Gate 3 at launch, we’ve made a list of all of them in this guide.
As we mentioned, Origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 are there to give players a pre-made build, a character with a background, and several quests throughout the game. Yet, if you make a custom one, you can still meet them and do their quests, but it might take more effort and time. If you plan to choose an origin character, here are the ones you’ll get at launch.
Astarion
Astarion is a vampire rogue who, due to certain things in his story, can walk in the day. He is one of the fan-favorite origin characters of Baldur’s Gate 3 due to his personality and background. If you want to play as a rogue with a mysterious past and a side of vampirism, Astarion is your go-to character.
Gale
Another beloved character and companion of the game is Gale. He is a human wizard, and whoever picks him as a companion or origin is in for a treat. He is someone who wants to get the favor of his goddess before becoming a destroyer. We won’t spoil too much of his lore, but his story is fantastic. If you’re into magic and are having difficulty making a custom character, Gale is a perfect origin you can choose.
Karlach
Karlach is a badass Thiefling Barbarian who is here to kick some butt. She had a terrible past and is looking for revenge. After being sold into slavery, she only wants to take down those involved. Besides her fantastic story, she’s a great character to have if you want a tanky and, at the same time, strong character.
Lae’zel
Lae’zel is the Githyanki fighter we’ve seen in trailers and the opening cinematic. After being infected by the Mind-Flayers, she’s looking to find a way to join her people again and regain their trust. She has a great story and should do great for a first playthrough as a balanced melee class.
Shadowheart
Shadowheart is a Half High-Elf Cleric who has one of the most secret backgrounds in the game. After a difficult mission, she must deliver a powerful relic while avoiding all sorts of enemies. Clerics are a fantastic class in Baldur’s Gate 3, so you should consider Shadowheart as an origin character for a playthrough.
Wyll
The Human Warlock of the party is Wyll. This character bargained with a devil to gain power and wants to break free from it as soon as possible. Due to that, there are several fun interactions you’ll get when playing as him.
The Dark Urge
Last but not least, we have the final origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3, and that’s The Dark Urge. Unlike other characters, you can fully customize this one; the difference is the gameplay mechanic throughout the playthrough. Your character will get certain urges to commit horrible things, and you can do them or fight them. The narrator will change, and new cinematics will play out. We recommend doing this one as a second playthrough.
And that’s it for all the origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. As you can see, Larian Studios has given us plenty to try when playing the game. Whether you want to use one of them or make your own, you’ll get to experience these characters while traveling the lands of the Forgotten Realms.
