If you lead him toward the right setup, your Wyll build in BG3 can ensure our human Warlock lives up to his many titles. Blade of Frontiers, monster-hunter extraordinaire, Wyll is undoubtedly a formidable character as an origin and a companion. After you meet him, you’ll learn how intertwined his story is with Karlach. If you recruit and keep him around, Wyll can serve as a reliable force in your party. Let’s break down the best Wyll build in Bladur’s Gate 3.
Warlock Wyll Build in BG3
(Updated on October 3, 2024 – updated links and format)
Wyll fits his Folk Hero story quite well. He’s a born noble with many people praising his exploits. However, he does hide a rather dark secret with a particular devil on his shoulder. Despite that (or because of it), Wyll can have an interesting build in BG3.
When you come across Wyll, he has the following features:
- Stats
- STR: 10
- DEX: 16
- CON: 14
- INT: 8
- WIS: 10
- CHA: 16
- Proficiencies
- Arcana
- History
- Intimidation
- Persuasion
The thing about Wyll is that he’s a Warlock class that automatically has The Fiend subclass. So, any Wyll build you try in BG3 goes along that subclass rather than The Great Old One or Archfey. Of course, you can visit Withers to respec him for something different. However, for the sake of our guide, we won’t do any respec or multiclassing.
Sticking with The Fiend plays out well with Wyll’s Baldur’s Gate 3 storyline with a certain demonic cambion. So, let’s dive into The Fiend and the best way to utilize it.
The Fiend Build – Features and Spells
The Fiend has three main progressions, so you’ll know the general direction of a solid Wyll build in BG3:
- Level 1: Dark One’s Blessing: Your patron gives you a Charisma Modifier and at least 1 HP whenever you reduce a hostile creature to 0 HP.
- Level 6: Dark One’s Own Luck: You’ll call upon your patron to add a 1d10 to an ability check.
- Level 10: Fiendish Resilience: Become resistant to any damage type you choose. You can only pick one at a time, and you must take a Short Rest to pick a new one.
Following the Warlock progression, Wyll will select Eldritch Invocations. These imbue him with more magical abilities. There are some that we strongly recommend for a great BG3 Fiend Wyll build:
- Level 2:
- Agonizing Blast: Add a Charisma modifier to your Eldritch Blast unless it’s negative.
- Armor of Shadows: Cast Mage Armor at will on yourself without consuming a spell slot.
- Level 5: Fiendish Vigor: Cast False Life on yourself at will without using a spell slot. The Necromancy spell gives you 7 HP.
- Level 7: Book of Ancient Secrets: Gives you the following three spells that you can cast once per Long Rest without using a spell slot:
- Ray of Sickness
- Chromatic Orb
- Silence
- Level 9: Minions of Chaos: Cast Conjure Elemental with a spell slot. It gives you an elemental ally that’ll follow and fight for you.
- Level 12: Lifedrinker: Melee attacks will deal more necrotic damage based on your Charisma modifier.
Also, at Level 3, you can pick a Pact Boon for Wyll. We suggest Pact of the Blade if you want a melee-focused Wyll in battle.
Best Spells for Wyll
If you want a strong Wyll build in BG3 using The Fiend subclass, then pay close attention to your spells. You’ll unlock different spells at different Levels. We suggest any of the following for Wyll:
- Armor of Agathys
- Arms of Hadar
- Command
- Hellish Rebuke
- Hex
- Scorching Ray
- Hold Person
- Fireball
- Hunger of Hadar
- Vampiric Touch
- Blight
- Wall of Fire
Cantrips are also vital for a reliable Wyll build in BG3. The below choices work well with him:
- Blade Ward
- Bone Chill
- Eldritch Blast
Best Feats for Wyll Build in BG3
Like with the other companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll select Feats that will improve his abilities. Wyll can choose Feats at Levels 4, 8, and 12. We need to improve Wyll’s skills. So, at Levels 4 and 8, select the Ability Improvement Feat and focus mainly on Charisma to get it up to 20.
Meanwhile, for Level 12, you can choose any of the below to work with his build:
- Spell Sniper: You’ll learn a cantrip and reduce what you need to roll for a crit hit by 1.
- Magic Initiate: Sorcerer: Wyll can learn two cantrips and a Level 1 Sorcerer spell. You’ll get the Charisma Spellcasting Ability for all three of them, but you can only cast the Level 1 spell once per Long Rest.
- War Caster: Wyll gets an Advantage on Saving Throws as he maintains Concentration on a spell.
