One of the best ways to keep track of your party in Baldur’s Gate 3 is with the game’s map, which will become an invaluable tool as you get deeper into the game, with more areas to explore and more characters to keep track of.

You’re given the ability to open the map as soon as you get control of your character following the introductory cutscenes. You’ll be able to see a mini-map in the upper-right corner of the screen with some helpful icons, but you’ll want to open the full map for a more detailed view. To open the map, press M.

When you open the map for the first time, you’ll only be able to see the room you started in since you haven’t explored the areas beyond it yet. As you explore the world around you, the map will update to show what you’ve found. This includes companions like Lae’zel and Us, who you can find during the Baldur’s Gate 3 prologue, along with additional companions you can pick up as your party grows and expands.

Party members can be seen represented by blue dots on the map, while the main character is a white dot. Allies, neutral NPCs, and enemies are represented by green, yellow and red dots respectively. Quest objectives are shown as gold diamonds, and hovering your mouse over any icon on the map will give you information on what it represents.

To toggle the map on or off, press M. You can add or remove custom waypoints by clicking the left mouse button and pan the map by clicking and dragging your mouse in the direction you want to move. Scrolling the mouse wheel lets you zoom in and out while looking at the map, letting you shift your focus between small details and the big pictures.
