The world of pink vibrancy and a patriarchal uprising is coming to your living room. Warner Bros. has set a streaming date for Barbie on Max, featuring an alternative ASL version. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will grace our screens on the service on December 15. This comes months after the initial digital release on services like Amazon in September.
The Sensational Barbie Goes to Streaming on Max Next Week With an ASL Version
The announcement comes from a Warner Bros. press release, in which the film will arrive on the streamer precisely at 12 a.m. PT/3 p.m. ET. The theatrical cut will be available along with another that supports American sign language. This means the film will display a “unique title in-app and can be identified by its key art with the sign language symbol.” ASL performer Leila Hanaumi will be featured.
A special event will be held to celebrate the ASL version on December 14 in Los Angeles. Robbie and Hanaumi will make an appearance for a Q&A with the audience. The event will be in collaboration with the non-profit Deaf West Theatre.
Streaming on Max puts Barbie in our homes after its historical box office run. The film grossed $1.4 billion, which shattered a multitude of records. For 2023, it holds the biggest opening weekend and the highest-grossing film of the year. Its more historical records include the biggest opening for a woman director, the biggest opening for a movie based on a toy, and the highest-grossing film solely directed by a woman.
For Max subscribers awaiting Barbie to hit the streaming service, you can expect a star-studded cast from the Greta Gerwig-directed film. Alongside its two leads, they are joined by Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), America Ferrera (Superstore), Kate McKinnon (Bombshell), Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War), Issa Rae (Insecure), Rhea Perlman (Matilda), Will Ferrell, and many more from supporting actors and surprising cameos.
