Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is getting an R rating…well kind of.
The movie which releases in theaters next month on March 25 is in fact rated PG-13 however, the “Ultimate Edition” when it releases on home video will be rated R. This R-rated edition of Batman V Superman will be an extended edition of the film surpassing its current runtime of 2 hours and 31 minutes. There are no current details other than “scenes of more violence” as to how to film received the R-rating.
When Batman v Superman was announced, Director Zack Snyder said we should expect a different version of Batman. This Batman would be based around Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” character which was older and more brutal. In the latest trailer, we can certainly see Batman isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to the bad guys of Gotham. It’s certainly a good possibility that we’ll see some more brutality out of the Dark Knight or possibly even the Joker that grant it this heavier rating.

Given the success of the recently released Deadpool which also has an R rating, this is a good move by Warner Bros. In general studios shoot for their comic films to be rated PG-13 to ensure the maximum profit at the box office as with many action films. The recent film The Expendables 3 even dropped to a PG-13 rating from the R in the two previous installments. The buzz around the R-rating for Batman v Superman will certainly garner interest for people to check out both versions of the film to compare and see the difference. Not to mention many Batman fans have wanted to see the Dark Knight in a live-action R-rated film.
