Hollywood is mourning the loss of a truly gifted character actor. Bernard Hill, known by many for his role in the 1997 blockbuster hit Titanic, has died at the age of 79. On May 5, the news of the actor’s death was shared publicly by his agent. It came just hours after his passing. Hill was due to appear at a local Comic Con Saturday. However, his appearance was canceled at the last minute, causing concern.

Bernard Hill’s agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed to the BBC that the actor died early on Sunday, May 5th.

Hill was due to return to the set to continue shooting the second season of the BBC drama The Responder, starring Martin Freeman. The season begins airing later Sunday.

Hill was also supposed to appear at Comic Con Liverpool on Saturday. However, his appearance was canceled at the last minute without reason. When news of Hill’s death became public, the event released a statement remembering him.

Hill’s family has not released a statement about his passing at this time.

Bernard Hill was in several truly memorable roles in movies throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.

Hill played Captain Edward Smith, the heroic man in charge of managing the Titanic who ultimately went down with his ship and crew.

In addition to that emotional performance, fans will also remember Hill for his role as Theoden, King of Rohan. He played the king in the cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and was featured throughout the LOTR trilogy.

Hill first began his journey as a character actor in 1982. His breakout role was in the BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff. In the years since, he’s also portrayed in several BBC projects, the 2002 film The Scorpion King and the 2008 Tom Cruise film Valkyrie.

Bernard Hill is being remembered by his peers for his acting range and the special traits he shared, on and off screen. Because Hill worked with so many in his varied career, there are many sweet memories of him being shared.
