A couple of best-selling Christian authors from Texas, Seth Michael Day and Heather Marie Day, have been arrested on charges of child abuse. The news enraged Texas residents, who used the opportunity to complain about how often individuals frame LGBTQ+ people as predators, in their opinion, while letting abuse run rampant in Christian circles.
As reported by Fox, the couple from North Texas was arrested by the Keene Police Department after an investigation that started when a high school teacher reported a case of physical abuse.
The victim, whose name was not reported, said that Seth Day physically abused her in September, using a cellphone to hit her. His companion, Heather Day, was present and allegedly chose not to intervene. As the investigation progressed, additional charges of sexual abuse involving Seth Day were filed.
The couple is known for having co-written the best-selling relationship book “I’ll See You Tomorrow,” a nonfiction book about relationships, forgiveness, and conflict resolution. Seth Day works as an assistant professor at Southwestern Adventist University in Keene and, after his arrest, was placed on administrative leave.
Texas Reacts to Arrest of Popular Christian Authors
Users on r/Texas had a fierce reaction when commenting on the case. Some of them used the opportunity to complain about harmful stereotypes that often depict LGBTQ+ people as predators. Someone said: “Wow! Still not a drag queen!” Others responded sarcastically: “How on earth did a pair of drag queens become best selling Christian authors?”
Other users were seemingly irritated to see this kind of abuse happening so often in Christian circles. One of them wrote: “It’s always the ones you most suspect,” while others agreed: “On brand.”
According to one Texan, ” Put ‘Christian’ in front of anything and the probability of adultery, abuse, and hypocrisy, goes through the roof.”
After the investigation, Seth Day was charged with Injury to a Child and Sexual Assault of a Child, while Heather Day was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child by Omission. Following the arrests, it remains to be seen how the trial will proceed.
