Sons of the Forest contains snow-capped peaks, sandy beaches, and the oppressive gloom of the forest itself, all of which can take a toll on your FPS. At its best, Sons can be as beautiful as Enshrouded or Valheim, but it can be tricky knowing which settings to tweak to get it there. Though high-end PCs can handle just about anything, and you can just turn down the settings on everything for low-end PCs, finding something that’s right for the mid-range options is a bit trickier. Here are the best graphic settings to improve your FPS while still getting some beautiful views in Sons of the Forest.
Best Settings To Improve FPS in Sons of the Forest
Before you start looking for water or sharpening your first spear, it’s a good idea to open up the Settings menu and start tinkering. There are a lot of options to play with, but the recommendations below are a good fit for most gaming PCs. After trying out these settings, feel free to adjust Draw Distance, Fog Quality, and Shadow Quality to see how much of an FPS drop you experience (if any). Here are the best graphic settings for Sons of the Forest:
Quality Settings

Draw Distance | Medium |
Ambient Occlusion | Medium |
Fog Quality | Low |
Anisotropic Textures | On |
Shadow Quality | Medium |
Clouds | Low |
Grass | Medium |
Water | High |
Parallax Distance | Medium |
Billboard Quality | Medium |
Texture Resolution | Ultra |
Weather Occlusion Quality | Medium |
Features
Anti Aliasing | SMAA |
Dynamic Resolution | OFF |
Bloom | On |
Screen Space Reflection | On |
Motion Blur | On |
Micro Shadowing | On |
Contact Shadows | On |
Chromatic Aberration | Off |
Most players will want to leave the two options under the “Style” category set to “On” and “Default.” They’re available if you want to play with different cinematic aesthetics, however. “Found Footage” is great if you want that grainy Blair Witch feel while “70’s” makes the whole experience feel like The Hills Have Eyes. There’s no harm in trying them out since you can reset them with a single click.
Draw Distance and Grass Quality can both have a noticeable impact on your FPS. If you’re having particularly good (or bad) luck with the graphic settings in Sons of the Forest, those are a good place to start playing around. Turning Contact Shadows off can also be a good option if your FPS is still struggling. That way you won’t miss the forest for the pixelated trees.
