Being a space pirate in Starfield is a very interesting experience. A pirate does whatever he demands, which means you’ll not be limited to respecting all rules of engagement. Want to keep your secrets through deception and steal starships? Ahoy, captain! To get started, you must pick some perks and choose a solid background for this role. Here’s everything you need to know about how to create the best space pirate build in Starfield.

If you want to start Starfield as a space pirate, you must make some decisions. For example, a pirate is good at persuasive conversations and has the ability to man a starship much better than other pilots. Let’s start with all the perks, abilities, and activities you would need and can do as a space pirate.

Space Scoundrel Background

Every player in Starfield has a background when they start the game. You’re first known as “Dusty,” a mining worker on Argos, working under the command of Lin. However, you’ll leave this mining planet as soon as you encounter an artifact. Now, if they ask who you are, you’ll need to have a solid background to explain, which you can pick early in the game.

Among the various roles you see in Starfield‘s character background options, the Space Scoundrel is the best fit for a pirate. Not only the meaning of this role is close to the term “Space Pirate,” but it also comes with the perks you’d need as the “Sparrow of the Galaxies.” Here are the perks you’ll be granted by picking the Space Scoundrel background in Starfield:

  • Pistol Certification
  • Piloting
  • Persuasion

First off, a space pirate needs to handle a pistol professionally. The Pistol Certification perk allows you to deal higher damage using pistols like Elegance. After that, you’d need what a space pirate must truly master in Starfield, and that’s the Piloting skill. This skill gives you more maneuverability with ship tunings, which is the bread and butter for a pirate.

Last but not least, we have the Persuasion skill for the best space pirate build in Starfield. This is a very important perk that a glibly pirate would master. In Starfield, you’ll encounter many situations involving persuading an NPC via dialogue; you’ll have only a few options to deal with them. If you successfully convince the person to cooperate, you’ll achieve items and get some good deals. But if you lose the argument, you’ll miss out on potential rewards.

Best Extra Skills To Unlock For Piracy

As soon as you choose the Space Scoundrel background early in the game, you’ll unlock the three mentioned skills automatically. However, as you progress, you’ll earn more skill points, which you can use to get more perks from the skill tree. Here are some more perks that help you in your journey as a space pirate in Starfield:

  • Wellness – Increased maximum health
  • Fitness – More stamina
  • Scavenging – Higher chance of finding credits and loot
  • Theft – Pickpocket NPCs
  • Deception – Higher chance of making enemy ships surrender
  • Negotiation – Use bribery in conversations
  • Ship Command – Increases your starship’s active crew members

Crimson Fleet

Being a space pirate in Starfield is rather a fun experience. You can steal ships, persuade the passing fleet to give you their loot and invade them if they don’t accept. To do so, when you see a ship landing on random planets, walk up to them, kill the crew, and steal it! Or attack them in space and shoot their engines to board them.

You can sell enemy ships for high amounts of credits or register them to use as your own. There’s also another pirate activity you can do in Starfield, and that’s stealing the contraband packages and selling them to certain vendors. Being a pirate is a very risky business in Starfield, but if you’re up for it, then you should join the Crimson Fleet.

The Crimson Fleet is a group of mercenaries in the game. They steal, take whatever they want, and vanish into the blackest sea of space. Sounds just like a place that a pirate should be, and if you’re one, why not join?

You can commit crimes and get caught in order to join the Crimson Fleet faster. But you’ll eventually join this mercenary group as a story mission if you’re following the UC Vanguard questline. Being a part of the Crimson Fleet will reward you with a ton of credits and mercenary missions, where you can invade the others and be a true space pirate in Starfield.
