In its three seasons on television, Black Mirror has managed to be one of the most unique pieces of entertainment this generation. It does this not only through its storylines and settings but through their presentation as well, with each episode having its own distinct plot. As it enters its fourth season though, Charlie Brooker and company are still trying to find ways to keep this fresh. What was one of those ideas? Sequels to previous episodes.
It may sound like a simple solution, the idea is an interesting, yet questionable decision. While there are plenty of instances of episodes containing mentions or easter eggs relating to previous episodes, a lot of the appeal of the show lies in its ability to watch each episode, having it feel like its own mini-movie.
During a podcast with Variety though, the shows creator stated that they’d workshopped continuations of previous episodes, including fan favorite “White Bear.”
“We’ve had ideas for sequels as well, which is something we haven’t entirely explored. I wouldn’t be averse to it. We’ve got a couple ideas in mind, but we’re sort of thinking about, practically, how we could do that and when the right time to do that would be,” Brooker said, “So potentially. But then in a Darwinian way, a new idea pops up and that wins the knife fight for the slot.”
On top of that, Brooker also stated that one of the biggest challenges is staying ahead of the real world. With the outcomes of events like the U.S election and Brexit happening what seems like every day, it’s hard for Black Mirror not only to stay relevant but to be even crazier than reality.
As of now, the show has been confirmed to currently be filming new episodes, meaning it’s only a matter of time before Black Mirror returns to Netflix to shattered your world all over again.
