A black Texas mother was left shocked after a boy said that he would rather take someone “white” to the homecoming dance than her daughter.
The mother shared a TikTok video detailing what happened. Because she was shocked by the situation, she asked viewers how they would feel if they were in her position. “How would you feel if your teenage son said this?” she wrote over the video.
She began the video by explaining that her daughter attends an all-girls school that does not hold homecoming events such as a homecoming dance. However, an all-boys school in the area does hold a homecoming dance. In order for a girl from the all-girls school to attend, she has to be invited by a boy from the all-boys school as his date.
The mother then shared that her daughter had been hoping a boy from the all-boys school would invite her to the dance, especially because all of her friends were already going. “She really wants to go,” the mother said.
According to the mother, her daughter’s friend already had a date whose friend was also available. They planned for the boy to meet her daughter to see if he would want to invite her to the dance. However, what happened next was something the mother did not expect.
The mother said the date sent his friend a picture of her daughter, after which the boy reportedly said that “he would rather go with somebody white.” The mother emphasized that the boy who made the comment is also black. She then explained that her daughter had said it would be difficult for her to find a date for the dance. This was “because all of the boys want to take white girls.” According to her, this included black boys as well.
As the video neared its end, the girl’s mother said, “I was rather shocked by this, but how would you feel if your son said that?.” She also asked in the caption, “Is this normal?” Viewers quickly responded to the video and the questions she raised.

After hearing what happened to the black Texas woman’s daughter, many viewers were left shocked. Some believed it was an unfortunate situation. They also said they would feel ashamed if their own son made a similar comment. “That’s extremely sad but not surprising,” one person wrote. Others warned the mother not to let her daughter attend the homecoming dance after what happened. “Don’t let her go!!! So she can stay safe,” one person wrote. Another person said, “The parents don’t care. My son better never say anything like that. Please find black girlfriends for your daughter and strategically place her in black environments. There are college prep camps at HBCUs. Maybe start there.”
