Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently announced that she ended a rule started by previous Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, which could limit transgender students’ ability to play sports. The move sparked an angry reaction from conservative voters, however, who accused the Virginia governor of not being moderate enough.
As reported by Radio IQ, Spanberger “quietly” ended a rule imposed by Youngkin at the end of his term that would “limit trans girls’ ability to participate in sports and use bathrooms and locker rooms.” The information was shared during the recent Virginia Pridefest, where the govenor vowed to support the LGBTQ+ community.
What made this decision stand out is that the information was only publicly revealed months after the intervention. No press release was issued, and the information was not made public until now.
Internet Reacts to Spanberger’s Latest Controversy
The news angered users on X, who fiercely criticized the governor. One of them said: “Boys are back in girls’ sports!” Someone else added: “I literally cannot stand that witch. She is destroying the state piece by piece.”
Most users seemed fairly angry at the decision to end Youngkin’s rule, and some seemingly felt betrayed because they believed she could have been a “moderate” politician: “The Governor just scrapped the rule in Virginia that would keep boys out of girls’ sports and bathrooms. Getting boys on your daughter’s sports team was so important to her, the Gov said she ‘burst into tears’; it made her so happy. So much for being a ‘moderate.’”
Others were more alarmed that this was not widely noticed until now: “Quietly is right. She tried to sneak this past parents … GOD, she’s awful. Share it out, Virginia.”
Reactions on the more liberal-leaning Reddit, however, were much more positive. One person said: “That’s my governor!!! We are the luckiest state in the country that we have her at the helm!”
Some Virginians even criticized what they believed was persecution against a minority: “The right-wing obsession with trans people says a lot about their goals: find a group small enough to ostracize and ridicule as the cause of all problems.”
It remains to be seen whether the decision will have any lasting effect on Spanberger’s standing with Virginia voters, but the move has already added another contentious issue to the political debate surrounding her administration.
