Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, actor Brad Pitt dated a number of women, most notably Iron Man‘s Gwyneth Paltrow. He was romantically involved with Friends star Jennifer Aniston for a short spell, too, before eventually marrying his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
In the past, Pitt has struggled with substance abuse and cannabis dependency, but his alcoholism reached its peak in September 2016, when Jolie claimed Pitt behaved abusively towards one of their children. Pitt became the adoptive father of Jolie’s adopted son (Maddox Chivan) and biological daughter (Zahara Marley), then the couple proceeded to have a daughter (Shiloh Nouvel), twins (Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline), and adopt another son (Pax Thien).
Jolie Accuses Pitt of Abusing One of Their Children on a Plane Ride
In September 2016, the FBI and the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services investigated Pitt — after complaints from Jolie — for child abuse following an incident on a plane. Pitt was accused by an ‘anonymous person’ of being verbally and physically abusive towards one of his and Angelina’s children. At the time, Pitt was not criminally charged for the incident by any authorities involved.
Among her allegations, Jolie stated that Pitt had grabbed and shook her during the plane ride, strangled one of their children, and struck another in the face, among other things.
The Legal Battle For Château Miraval
In 2022, Pitt and Jolie entered into a legal battle over their formerly co-owned vineyard, Château Miraval. USA Today obtained the legal documents of the incident, whereby Pitt was accused of “looting” the company’s assets.
The complaint was made by Nouvel, Jolie’s former investment firm, which held (at the time) her 50% stake in the winery. Meanwhile, Pitt’s firm Mondo Bongo owned the other 50%. Nouvel sought $350 million in damages, claiming “Pitt masterminded a so-far-successful plan to seize de facto control of Château Miraval, despite lacking a controlling ownership interest. He has frozen Nouvel out of Château Miraval and treats it as his personal fiefdom.”
During negotiations, Jolie’s lawyers claimed Pitt had asked Jolie to sign “a nondisclosure agreement prohibiting her from speaking outside of court about his abuse of her and their children.” The legal battle is still ongoing, as Pitt and Jolie have yet to reach a conclusion.
Brad Pitt Hopes To Move Forward With His New Beau
In the midst of his legal troubles, Pitt set his sights on his new girlfriend Ines de Ramon, a source told PEOPLE.
“The long-drawn drama with Angelina used to really get to him, especially the custody drama and abuse allegations,” the source says. “It’s been very stressful for him to have to defend over and over again. But since things don’t seem to change, he’s trying to move on with his life.”
The source also discloses that Pitt “finally feels happy again” with Paul Wesley’s ex-wife.
“Although he’s always been surrounded by trusted friends, he still had years when he felt very lonely. Sharing his life and living with Ines now makes his very happy. Ines is great. She doesn’t come with any baggage and is able to just support him.”
Other friends close to Pitt “just [want] him to be happy,” the source continues. “He’s certainly not perfect. He’ll be the first to tell you. [But] he will continue to push back legally.”
After the incident back in 2016, Pitt has committed to sobriety. As Vulture confirms, Pitt reduced his cannabis use and focused on his work after a trip to Morocco, where he witnessed extreme poverty and suffering.
As for Jolie, she is set to reprise her titular role in Maleficent 3 after skipping out on Kung Fu Panda 4. In past installments, she provided the voice for Master Tigress, one of the Furious Five.
