Brandon Routh is once again suiting up to play Superman. This time, Routh will play Supes in the Arrowverse’s upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.
According to Deadline, Routh and Tyler Hoechlin, who currently plays Superman in the Arrowverse, will both suit up as DC’s most notable boy scout in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. The report states that they will play the character “in different time frames”. On Twitter, Brandon Routh seemingly confirmed this news as he expressed his gratitude for getting a second chance to play this iconic role:
Honored, humbled, grateful, and still pinching myself. 😄#ReturnOfSuperman#Superman#Crossover#Arrowverse #SDCC2019 @DCComics@DEADLINE https://t.co/M5nQdTWYmh

Tyler Hoechlin’s involvement in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is no big surprise. Since his introduction in Supergirl, Hoechlin has received high praise from critics and fans alike for his performance as Supes. The character seemingly retired at the end of 2018’s “Elseworlds” crossover to go start a family with Lois Lane. With “Crisis on Infinite Earths” being billed as the Arrowverse’s most ambitious and largest project yet, it’s easy to see how the character will be talked out of his early retirement.
Brandon Routh is a different story. Routh starred in 2006’s underwhelming Superman Returns. But, Routh has also been a major player in the Arrowverse as Ray Palmer/Atom since the character’s introduction in Arrow season three. Currently, Routh’s Ray Palmer is one of the main characters on the criminally underrated series Legends of Tomorrow and one has to think Ray will have a decent role in the crossover as well. It’ll be intriguing to see how Routh’s Superman is introduced and how they address the doppelganger situation going on between the two DC characters.
It looks like the Arrowverse may have a big role in San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Entertainment Weekly recently revealed Oliver Queen’s final suit ahead of Arrow’s panel at SDCC and Arrowverse consultant Marc Guggenheim has teased a “pretty cool” announcement at the event too (which may have been this Brandon Routh/Superman news).
