Why We’re Into It

Set almost entirely within a cramped Tokyo apartment, DON’T WATCH follows Shinji, a socially withdrawn young man embodying the hikikomori lifestyle. What begins as a grounded exploration of isolation slowly morphs into something far more nightmarish, as Shinji becomes haunted by an eerie force rooted in Japanese folklore. Hyakume, the hundred-eyed specter that turns watching into a death sentence.

What makes DON’T WATCH stand out is how it blends thematic weight with mechanical tension. The core gameplay revolves around the player’s need to avoid eye contact, literally, to survive. It’s not about fighting back. It’s about enduring, and that emotional weight hits harder than most traditional horror mechanics.

There are no jump scares for cheap thrills here. Instead, the game relies on atmosphere, subtle distortion, and symbolic horror to tell its story. The apartment’s slow descent into a waking nightmare -walls that breathe, eyes that multiply, the crushing sense of being watched- makes it a standout for fans of narrative-driven horror with psychological depth.

And what psychological horror would be complete without an eerie soundtrack? DON’T WATCH is no exception, and what makes it especially compelling is that the game’s director personally wrote and performed the entire original soundtrack (you can listen here). The result is a score that feels deeply connected to the game’s emotional tone: minimal, tense, and often dissonant in all the right ways. It doesn’t just accompany the horror; it internalizes it, amplifying the sense of dread in every creaking floorboard and flickering light.
