California Angry As Republicans Celebrate Millions Losing SNAP Benefits ‘No more lazy people getting free food’

No more free food

Residents and Democrats in California are angry after Republicans and Trump administration officials celebrated a dramatic drop in SNAP enrollment, with millions of Americans reportedly losing access to food assistance benefits over the last year. Critics say the cuts are devastating working families already struggling with high grocery prices and rent across the state.

In a post shared to Facebook and reported by ABC7 News out of California, many folks voiced their anger at the current administration’s celebration of the massive SNAP cuts, and also had unkind words for Conservative voices who were making jokes at the expense of those among the 4 million affected by the tighter SNAP restrictions.

The backlash exploded online after Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins praised new numbers showing roughly 4.3 million fewer Americans receiving SNAP benefits since early 2025. Rollins argued that the drop reflected a stronger economy and tougher enforcement of fraud, saying that fewer people were relying on government assistance programs. Here are what some people on both sides of the political spectrum had to say.

“If they’re really hungry, give them mre’s”

“Judge a president by how many people come off of welfare, not by how many are put on”

“How is cutting off 4.3 million poor people from food making America great again?”

“That’s awesome. No more lazy people getting free food.”

“Amazed at how empathetic and compassionate people are. I am sure the tax taken out of your pay is a very small percentage that you do not see, do not miss, and most likely get back in a refund at tax time.”

The issue has become especially heated in California, where food costs remain among the highest in the nation. Anti-hunger advocates say many families depend on SNAP to survive, particularly seniors, disabled residents, and low-income workers. With further restrictions and more expected to lose benefits this Summer, the anger won’t subside anytime soon.
