In the latest edition of “California Man” slowly becoming the new “Florida Man,” an individual has sparked debate after harassing a sea lion into going back in the water at a Northern California beach.
The incident reportedly took place on June 27, 2026, at Trinidad State Beach in Northern California. The video appears to show a man approaching a sea lion resting on the sand before repeatedly gesturing toward the water, seemingly trying to get the animal to return to the ocean. He then pokes and prods the sea lion before appearing to half-drag it back into the water.
Interestingly, the person filming the video made constant mention of the fact that they should get out of their car to help the animal. However, they never do so, as pointed out by many Redditors who saw the clip.
While it’s impossible to know what this man was thinking, it does appear that his actions were well-intended, albeit misguided. As one person pointed out on Reddit, “He thinks it’s a beached whale, and he’s trying to save it, wondering why nobody is trying to help him.” Another echoed, “I think he’s just really dumb. Appears to want to help him back into the water. Like, does he not know they rest on land? Needs a few more brain cells.” We’re inclined to believe this, given that it appears the man was trying to be gentle. He was pointing to where he was instructing the animal to go, rather than manhandling it.
However, not everyone was interested in the man’s motives. Rather, they were focused on the animal being harassed from its rest. One individual chimed in, “Imagine a sea lion telling you to get your [expletive] back on land while you’re trying to relax in the cool summer water.” Another shared, “Anyone else hoping he was gonna get bit?“
On that latter note, perhaps karma was protecting this man due to his presumed good intentions, as many pointed out he was extremely lucky he didn’t get hurt. One person even shared, “I would expect him to now be missing a hand.“
Sea lions are very strong and can get rather aggressive if provoked, as this one was. Somehow, it seems the animal realized the person was trying to help, and decided to just go into the water for some peace rather than get feisty with him.
The man doesn’t appear to have been identified, and perhaps that’s for the best. If the video encourages him — and anyone else watching — to think twice before interfering with wildlife in the future, it may have already served its purpose.
