A California man named Hunter Peterson recently made the news after announcing his goal to purchase the recently bankrupt Spirit Airlines. His pitch: to have it funded and owned by the people. However, his most recent update has many wanting to pull their pledges after he revealed his partnership with Mutiny CEO Jay Davis, an alleged MAGA supporter.

Peterson first caught attention when he announced on TikTok that if everyone were to donate, they could save the airline. Soon, his call to action received over 330 million in pledges from people lending their support. Thousands love the idea of an airline owned entirely by the people. However, after his partnership with Davis was announced, several have already said, “I’m out.” The video has received several angry comments, such as “I had pledged $250 and will not be contributing if this moves forward.” Another commenter says, “I pledged 10k. I’m pulling out.”

Others have taken to TikTok to voice their concerns, such as one creator who posted a video bashing the California man’s announcement. The video includes a clip of Peterson introducing Davis, whom the TikToker describes as “a Trumper.” Part of his concerns is a series of alleged X comments. One reads, “We are sick of the world grifting off of us while hating us. Enjoy speaking Mandarin, you moron.” Another is a controversial comment regarding reproductive rights, which the creator says, “Oh, so we’re woman-blaming too, Jay?” He also states that he believes either the California man didn’t do his research or “just didn’t read the room at all.” This video has received over 2000 comments, over 71,000 likes, and over 320,000 views.

Several Blast California Man’s Partnership

Several have left comments under Peterson’s original video, bashing his decision and vowing to pull their pledges. One commenter says, “If Jay Davis is in, I’m out.” Another told the California man, “You fried that QUICKLY.” Meanwhile, many others are saying, “You blew it, man. [Expletive], bringing in Jay Davis?” Another says, “Way to kill all the momentum you had with this one.”

Many are expressing frustration over the hope Peterson provided, which they now feel is gone. One commenter states that they’re “so tired of being disappointed by something that could’ve been so good for us.” However, some are mad about there being a CEO in general when the plan is for the people to own the airline. One says, “As soon as he started saying ‘CEO, ‘ I knew it was a grift.”

Allegedly, Peterson claims he vetted Mutiny and Davis fully before partnering. It is unclear if he will continue to do so after the backlash.
