California Rep. Ted Lieu is calling for answers after reports revealed that a Russian businessman close to Vladimir Putin helped pay for Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.
Lieu called the arrangement “very, very scandalous” and tied it to longstanding concerns about Russian influence in American politics. Donald Trump Jr. and his wife have confirmed that Umar Kremlev funded two nights of celebrations, describing him as a “dear friend” whose contribution was a generous wedding gift.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the celebrations, including renting a private island and paying for a fireworks display. The payments reportedly came through an entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev heads.
Lieu also pointed to the 2016 election, saying Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort “colluded with the Russians” and shared campaign information with them. “Colluded” is Lieu’s characterization; investigations established that Manafort shared internal campaign polling data with Konstantin Kilimnik, whom the Senate Intelligence Committee identified as a Russian intelligence officer.
Lieu isn’t the only Democrat seeking answers. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has opened an investigation into Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev.
Garcia sent letters to Trump Jr. and the White House requesting records related to gifts and financial dealings involving Kremlev, saying the reported arrangement raises questions about foreign influence. The inquiry does not itself establish wrongdoing by Trump Jr. or Kremlev.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has also weighed in, saying a Justice Department investigation into the wedding gift appears unlikely because he has not seen evidence suggesting a crime was committed.
Ted Lieu’s Don Jr. Russia Claims Draw Sharp Online Pushback
Lieu’s remarks reopened familiar arguments over Russian influence in American politics, with critics accusing Democrats of returning to an old political attack. “Russia! Russia! Russia! recycling the same old tired talking point 12 years lmao,” one person wrote.
Another demanded evidence for Lieu’s broader claims: “You have proof? Then show it to us (U.S.).”
Others viewed the newly reported wedding funding as reason for additional scrutiny. One commenter described the revelation as unsurprising, while another responded with a “STANDING OVATION FOR TED LIEU!”
The underlying wedding arrangement, however, is no longer based solely on anonymous reporting. Trump Jr. and Bettina have confirmed that Kremlev hosted two nights of their celebrations, while describing his involvement as a gift from a friend.
The controversy has now moved beyond Lieu’s call for an explanation. House Oversight’s top Democrat has requested records from Trump Jr. and the White House concerning Kremlev’s gifts and financial relationship with the president’s son.
Trump Jr. and Bettina have defended Kremlev’s involvement as generosity from a personal friend. Garcia’s inquiry is now seeking more information about that relationship and the wedding expenses, though opening an investigation does not itself establish wrongdoing.
