A California teacher blasts schools for normalizing racism at a young age. He specifically addresses his experience in elementary classrooms with students who are openly racist toward him as their teacher. The teacher teaches in Los Angeles, California. He feels that the blatant racism that happens in the schools doesn’t get talked about enough. His video has received over 10,000 views since it was posted. It has also received many comments from those who have experienced racism as students.
In the video, he shares two main examples of times he experienced racism as a “black teacher in L.A.” The first is an encounter he had with a little boy who “decided to go as [the California teacher] was writing [his] name, Mr. [expletive].” The second incident occurred when a “little Hispanic girl, a first-grader, was talking about, all [expletive], he’s black.” Furthermore, he claims that various students have told him he “looks like this or that.” He believes that if these “[kids are] tough enough to do it to a grown adult,” he can’t imagine how they treat their fellow students.
Part of this problem for him is that “schools don’t do enough about racism when it happens.” While in theory racism isn’t welcome in schools, he believes the response to these racist incidents hasn’t been sufficient. The California teacher argues that the first time the incident occurs, that’s when it needs to be stopped. He explains that some children don’t want to attend school “because of the things they hear from other students.” The teacher feels that if parents are teaching this behavior to their children, then they should keep them at home. He says that while all children have the right to an education, “they don’t have the right to interfere with somebody else’s education.”
California Teacher Encourages Others To Speak Out
The California teacher’s TikTok has encouraged several people to share their experiences with racism. Many of them have shared stories in the comments. One commenter describes a story of an immigrant student who called them racist words, saying, “He couldn’t speak English, but he learned those words in English rather quickly.” Another claims, “The teacher literally allows it and laughs at it at my school.” Another alleges that throughout elementary they were “subjected to racial discrimination by faculty members.”
Others thank him for drawing attention to the situation. One says, “Thank you for bringing awareness cause it’s sad that parents teach their kids these things.” Another agrees, “Schools are horrible, the racism needs to stop.” One commenter agrees that the subject needs to be addressed, saying, “Let’s talk about it!”
The teacher believes no one, teacher or student, should have to deal with racism. He will continue to speak out as he feels the subject needs to be looked at more deeply.
