A woman in Los Angeles, California, managed to shave off a “fat tax” from a clothing item at Target, after its 3X size was shown to be $2 more expensive than a smaller one. While she wanted to express how wrong this was, users vehemently disagreed with her, sparking multiple online debates.
Content creator Samyra uploaded the clip on TikTok. She is a very popular influencer, singer, and body-positivity activist whose content revolves around these topics. And while she does have lots of viral clips, the one attached above became one of her most popular ones in recent months.
The California woman recorded herself while talking to a Target employee. She brought up the pricing difference and asked the employee to price match a piece of clothing. Samyra included screenshots of both versions of the same clothing item in the Target app. While an L size costs $6, a 3X size costs $8.
“That just seemed, like, a little weird to me,” she said. The employee, very welcoming, answered, “Yeah, honestly, it does sometimes happen just because of more material. It sounds really stupid and ridiculous.”
Samyra agreed that it was “stupid and ridiculous,” and as she laughed, the employee agreed to her request. She said, “I’m gonna change it anyway for you. I don’t agree with that myself. Personally, I’ve never agreed with that.”
The conversation kept going, with the California woman pointing out that the difference made no sense. Why? Because there was no price difference between an XS size and an XL size. To the Target employee, it didn’t make any sense.
Debates Break Out
The video sparked multiple responses online.
Some viewers reacted positively to the clip, often praising the Target employee for her kindness. One said, “What an angel at the cash register.” Another one commented, “Now THAT’S an ally!“
Others, however, criticized Samyra, telling her that the price was correct due to the extra fabric used. One user wrote, “Not stupid… not ridiculous. More fabric, higher price…” Another one added, “Bless her for agreeing, because that’s ridiculous.”
Still, some users debated this notion, saying that, in the grand scheme of things, prices shouldn’t vary as the extra fabric used does not justify the price hike. And yet, another user explained, “It’s because they have to order another SKU but won’t sell as much, so it’s not just material.”
While Samyra has not posted a follow-up or update as of the writing of this article, given her responses, she most likely still believes the price difference is nonsensical.
