NPD is an industry-tracking group that covers the sales of video games and consoles, releasing the top list of each month, quarter and year. Unfortunately for the month of December, retail sales were down 1% from last year. The big winner of December is unsurprisingly Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which also was the top seller for the entire year of 2015.
The top 10 list for month of December and the entire year is as follows:
December 2015:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
- Star Wars: Battlefront
- Fallout 4
- Madden NFL 16
- NBA 2K16
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege

- Minecraft: Story Mode
- FIFA 16
Entire Year of 2015:

- Madden NFL 16
- Fallout 4
- Star Wars: Battlefront
- Grand Theft Auto V
- NBA 2K16

The top selling console of the year was the Sony PlayStation 4. Despite sales being down for software, hardware sales for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One exceeded the 26 months total their predecessors, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii’s sales dropped 71 percent to the year while portables dropped 32 percent. Current gen sales are currently up 4%.
Sony PR has issued an official statement “As we reflect on an amazing year, we want to thank fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling console in December and in 2015. PS4 also had the strongest third-party software sales in 2015 in the U.S., according to NPD.”
