Call of Duty and Dead Space are probably not the two franchises that come to mind in terms of similarities, because at first glance (let’s be honest) there really are none. That’s about to change, though, because it’s 2017 and anything seems possible in the world of gaming. Developer Sledgehammer Games discussed how Call of Duty: WWII will not only have back story that is rooted in real events but that this next installment in the CoD series will have elements that are reminiscent of Dead Space, yet another fan-favorite franchise.  And, yes, it has to do with zombies.

Call of Duty WWII

This will be Sledgehammer Games’ second time as the lead developer for a Call of Duty title, and its co-founders, Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield, are bringing inspiration from when they worked on the original Dead Space in 2008. At first glance, the inclusion of a Zombies mode seems like it does little to shake up the standard Call of Duty formula to which we’re accustomed, as Treyarch took this leap already with the release of Call of Duty: World at War in 2009. However, in an interview with Edge Magazine, Condrey explained how WWII will be “unique to our Dead Space signature”, and this could potentially include elements of horror that have simply never been seen in the franchise.

In addition to this new inclusion of horror, Condrey also revealed that Sledgehammer embarked on research trips to maximize the authenticity of the setting and the backstory. Other additions to the franchise will include female soldiers in the multiplayer mode, as well as a playable protagonist in the campaign. More than likely, we will see more at E3 2017.

Call of Duty: WWII is scheduled to launch on November 3, 2017. Pre-order the game now to receive access to the private beta. Missed the full reveal? Watch the stream below.
