Deranged antics

A California community college is facing criticism and mounting local GOP backlash after a viral video appeared to show students striking and eventually decapitating a piñata resembling President Donald Trump.

The footage was reportedly recorded at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, according to the New York Post.

In the video, a blindfolded participant is spun around before being handed a stick and directed toward the Trump piñata. The figure is dressed in a blue suit and red cap while holding a sign containing an anti-ICE message.

After several strikes, the piñata’s head separates from its body. Another person then raises the damaged figure as members of the surrounding group cheer.

The conservative social media account Libs of TikTok shared the clip and alleged that Contra Costa College counselor Lorena Gonzalez was present and appeared to oversee or celebrate the activity. Gonzalez had not publicly responded to the allegation when the story began circulating.

They argued the scene crossed the line between political satire and imagery depicting violence against a public official. Others emphasized that the involvement of a college employee, if confirmed, would and should make the incident more concerning than an independently organized student protest. Most outright demanded a resignation or firing over it.

The California School Responds

Contra Costa College responded by distancing itself from the display.

“Contra Costa College does not condone violent political rhetoric,” the school said, adding that it was handling the incident as a personnel matter.

The White House also condemned the footage. Spokesman Davis Ingle characterized the display as “political violence” and suggested that those involved seek help for what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Others in the comments started attacking the folks who thought it was a funny idea to begin with. They pointed out hypocrisy in the process.

“A California college encouraging political violence? Color me shocked.”

“Imagine the outrage if we did that with Obama or Biden”

The controversy now centers on whether the display was protected political expression, an inappropriate school-related activity, or both. It also raises questions about the standards public colleges should apply when employees participate in politically charged events featuring violent imagery.
