Like in other Bethesda game series, from The Elder Scrolls to Fallout, factions play a huge role in Starfield. Each group in the game provides unique views and challenges during your journey exploring the Milky Way. But veteran Morrowind or New Vegas players might remember having to run a number of playthroughs to be able to complete all factions’ storylines. So, is it possible to join multiple factions and not get faction-locked in Starfield?

Are You Faction Locked in Starfield?

There is no faction lock in Starfield, you can join multiple, and even all available factions, and complete their quests. At the start of the game, you will be a part of the Constellation faction, and there are groups that are in constant conflict with each other like the Crimson Fleet and United Colonies. Nevertheless, you can join all of them and complete all available storylines. But you need to fulfill certain criteria before being able to join them. As an example, to get recognized by Crimson Fleet, you have to commit a crime in the United Colonies-controlled areas. To join Ryujin Industries, you have to fill up a job application at any Ryujin Kiosk.

Technically speaking, there are six major factions in Starfield:

  1. Constellation, rag-tag galaxy explorers based in New Atlantis, Jemison, Alpha Centauri
  2. Crimson Fleet, a notorious gang of misfits and criminals based in Kryx
  3. Freestar Collective, the “loose confederation” of three distinct star systems, based in Akila City, Akila, Cheyenne
  4. Ryujin Industries, the most powerful mega-corporation, based in Neon on Volii Alpha
  5. United Colonies Vanguard, the militarized space republic. Based in New Atlantis, Jemison, Alpha Centauri
  6. Xenofresh Corporation: the corporation that produces the Aurora drug. Based in Neon on Volii Alpha

Aside from the six major ones, there are also many minor factions that will dish out additional side quests during your adventure. There are at least 9 side factions in the game. Below are the currently known minor factions that you can meet and help out in Starfield:

  • Argos Company: Mining company
  • Ecliptic Mercenaries: Mercenary group
  • House of the Enlightened: Religious organization
  • House Va’ruun: Religious organization that worships the Great Serpent
  • Sanctum Universum: Religious organization
  • Stroud-Ecklund: Shipbuilder corporation
  • Spacers: Space raiders
  • The Trade Authority: Trade organization, post delivery and ferrying missions
  • Trackers: Bounty hunters

That’s pretty much everything you need to know about factions in the game. There are quite a lot of major and minor factions in Starfield, and you can join multiple of them. Clearing any available quests from any factions should help you quickly raise your levels and get more money for your travel expenses.
