Starfieldย has severalย factionsย that each have their own goals. When they encounter you, they have various recruitment tactics to bring you on board. There’s no obligation to accept any of them, and you can continue your adventure. But just like pickingย traits, there isn’t an inherently bad choice. Each faction has certain benefits, such as missions only available to them. One such faction is UC Vanguard, which you meet early on during your adventure. You don’t have to join them, but the door is open if you are interested. Here’s how you join UC Vanguard inย Starfieldย and what the process looks like.

You learn about UC Vanguard when you are carrying out your first Constellation mission with Sarah. You must speak to Commander John Tuala, who gives you the information you need. He also offers you an invitation to join, though you can’t accept it right away. If you are interested, return to Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system and head to the MAST building. Speak with Tuala and tell him you want to join UC Vanguard. He asks you to take the nearby elevator down to the Vanguard Orientation Hall to begin.

When you leave the elevator, sign up at a nearby terminal. Make sure you don’t have a single bounty from anotherย Starfieldย faction, or you can’t sign up right away. Once you agree, head through the Orientation Hall, which is a series of museum exhibits. You can listen to them or head straight to the elevator to move on. The next exam is a piloting simulator, which requires you to test your flight skills at an assigned pod.

Inside the simulator, you must defeat several enemies around a simulated remote world. Defeat at least three tiers of enemies to pass, with each tier containing a set number of opponents. Once you defeat all enemies in a level, you progress to the next one.

Your ship stats won’t be the same as your current ship, but it will be enough for the exam. Clear three waves of enemies to pass, though you can go further if you like. If you fail a tier, you can leave your seat and go south to find a terminal that lets you retry the current tier.

Once you are done, head back to Commander Tuala, and you are brought on as a provisional member. Follow him outside to swear an oath, and you are officially part of UC Vanguard. There’s still a probationary mission to complete, but that simply allows you to take on more assignments.
