In any role-playing game, especially after the success and interactivity of Baldur’s Gate 3, everyone wants to know if you can pet the cat or dog wandering the game world. And Starfield is no different, as we’re all curious. While Bethesda Game Studios never directly confirmed whether players could adopt a pet as a companion in Starfield, they did show off an astronaut and a young girl accompanied by an everyday house cat in one of their story trailers. This has led to speculation from many wondering whether you can pet dogs and cats in Starfield. Here’s your answer!

Can Players Pet Dogs and Cats in Starfield?

With over 1,000 planets to explore in Starfield, many of you may feel rather lonely wandering the depths of space in the cockpit of a custom-built spaceship. But what if a furry friend was roaming the hab module of that ship? Unfortunately, pets were never directly confirmed by Bethesda Game Studios. The key art shown above certainly features a four-legged feline with no abnormalities or alien features whatsoever, but we’ve yet to see a single dog in any showcase.

Furthermore, as of this writing, there has been no indication that you can pet a dog or cat in Starfield. That said, Todd Howard is on record saying, “We like being able to touch everything. Those moments make the whole thing believable. Being able to watch the sunset, and nighttime come, and just sit there and watch the world go by. Seems like it’s not gameplay, but it is vital to how you feel.” Many feel he’s alluding to the ability to pet an animal with his “touch everything” comment.

Of course, Fallout 4 featured Dogmeat. So, why wouldn’t Starfield also feature pets of some type?

Even if the vanilla game does not allow you to keep a pet onboard your ship or to pet a dog or cat, the modding community will surely step up before long.
