Chris Claremont is making a triumphant return to the X-Men universe. The comics writer helped craft some of the most influential X-Men stories. Now, he is returning with a new limited series based on one of his most popular characters: Gambit. An all-new five-part series from Claremont explores the relationship between Gambit and Storm. It kicks off in Gambit #1 this July.
What Is This Gambit Series About?
Chris Claremont is teaming up with artist Sid Kotain for the five issues of Gambit. The series follows Gambit and a younger Storm as they make their way across New Orleans. Or rather, the two thieve their way through the streets of Louisiana. Of course, this time together helps establish a bond between the Cajun and the Goddess of Storms.
However, it is not all fun and game for the two mutants. The series follows the two as they embark on an otherworldly adventure that puts them right in the path of the Shadow King. This allows for Claremont to explore Gambit as he goes from slick thief to X-Man hero. Plus, it gives powerful insight into Storm during an important time in her life.
Why Focus On The X-Men’s Past?
It seems odd for Claremont to return to the X-Men, only to focus on the past. In an interview with AiPT Comics, Claremont revealed why he decided to do just that. Mainly, he felt it was the perfect opportunity for “a whole-lotta-fun to be had by all involved.” After all, while all eyes are on Gambit for the way he dresses and “his great body and gorgeous looks,” no one is focusing on Storm. Therefore, the targets look to Gambit while Storm picks their pocket.
However, Claremont admits that the true reason for the Gambit series is that “the story turned out to be a whole lot more fun this way.”
