Civil War Trailer: Kirsten Dunst Survives a Divided Country

Alex Garland’s political thriller looks intense and almost too real for today’s climate.

A24 is going bold in 2024. Kirsten Dunst leads in the trailer for Civil War, the next film by Ex Machina director Alex Garland (seen below). The film will also star Jesse Plemons, Cialee Spaeny, Sonoya Mizouno, Wagner Moura, Karl Glusman, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman as the President of the United States.

The Civil War trailer sees the beginning of a divided United States. As states secede rapidly, the country goes into chaos. A group of people try to go to DC, even though the capitol is heavily fortified and the government has turned on civilians.

Civil War Trailer Starring Kirsten Dunst Is A24’s Biggest Movie

While it is not the budget of traditional blockbusters, A24 is busting out by delivering one of its biggest movies to date. Writer-director Garland has had previous budgets of $15 million for Ex Machina, approximately $40 for Annihilation, and approximately $7 million for Men. The studio’s biggest hits, like Everything Everywhere All at Once, had a budget of $25 million. Just watching the trailer for Civil War showcases how it is utilizing its $75 million. If a success, this could be the bridge for the studio to get into more commercial films as it has been attempting to do.

A24 has had limited releases in IMAX, but the war epic will include a full release in IMAX. It has had previous events in IMAX for Everything Everywhere, and Ari Aster’s latest film, Beau Is Afraid.

The 2024 movie could be the filmmaker’s last time he sits in the director’s chair. In an interview with Screen Daily, the writer-director talked about the “exhausting” experience of going from Men to Civil War after two days. He started as a novelist, then went into writing movies like 28 Days Later, and years later, he became a director. Now, he is thinking about taking a “step back” to write for other creatives. He is certain his upcoming film will be his last, “at least for a while.”

Civil War will be released on April 26, 2024.
