Little Nightmares is a series with a huge name, thanks to its iconic gameplay and eerie art style. Since the first title was released, fans were craving more, and after four years, they got the sequel. While the second innovated upon many aspects of the game, many wondered where the series would go after launching two magnificent titles. During Gamescom 2023, players worldwide saw the reveal of the new Little Nightmares 3 game and the addition of an online co-op mode. This is definitely a game changer, but will it be good, or will it harm the series?

Little Nightmares 3 Co-Op Could be a Bold, Yet Great Addition

Many felt wary when they saw the upcoming Little Nightmares 3 game getting a co-op mode. Yet, there are a few reasons to consider why it can be great. First of all, Supermassive Games is helming the next entry of the series, and they’ve made some stellar co-op titles in the past. Games like Until Dawn and The Quarry gave us some of the best co-op horror games that relied on heavy narrative elements. Now, while Little Nightmares as a series drifted away from co-op modes, getting one for the third entry wouldn’t be bad.

The fact that a co-op mode will be present means solving puzzles will be much more engaging. Yes, you can also play solo and have the AI control Low or Alone, the two new characters, but having someone else with you will make the game more fun and less scary. Plus, we don’t have many co-op games yet with such a fantastic art style. A recent title that comes to mind is It Takes Two, albeit with a less scary setting. So yes, we think having a co-op mode in Little Nightmares 3 is a good addition and might make the game’s atmosphere less stressful for those not fond of playing titles of this genre solo.

Ultimately, it comes down to innovation. A few things might get stale when a series reaches its third or fourth game. Let’s look at Final Fantasy; the series has been revamping its gameplay aspects to give players a fresh experience. Yes, it isn’t the genre, but it’s an example of how developers shouldn’t be afraid of experimenting.

The fact that Little Nightmares 3 is getting a co-op mode shows the developers’ bravery and confidence after creating a solid foundation to let them try new things. Yet, we’ll have to wait and see how it plays in the end, but so far, we think this third entry is going on the right track by letting players game together.
