According to a report from Variety, Cobra Kai has been renewed by Netflix for season 5.
The news of this renewal comes just a few months before Cobra Kai‘s season 4 arrives on Netflix. Currently, the 4th season is set to drop on the streaming platform in December. But, before that even happens, Cobra Kai‘s season 5 will begin filming in Atlanta this Fall.
The series launched back in 2018 on YouTube’s attempt at a paid streaming service, YouTube Red. Cobra Kai stayed with Youtube Red for two seasons. However, due to issues with the service, Cobra Kai found a new home with Netflix for its third, fourth, and now the fifth season.
Cobra Kai serves as a sequel series to the 1980’s Karate Kid movies. Throughout its three seasons and marketing for the fourth, it has referenced or featured characters from all three of the original of films. It has not yet referenced the follow up from the 1990s. 1994’s The Next Karate Kid saw Mr. Miyagi take on a new student played by Hilary Swank.
The series primarily follows Johnny Lawerence, played by William Zabka. Lawerence was the first karate rival of the protagonist, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), in the original film. Cobra Kai explores how the lives of Lawerence and LaRusso have played out in the decades since. For Lawerence, life has not been kind. Starting a new Cobra Kai dojo is his last and potentially only chance to get his life together. However, for LaRusso, life has been kind. His success in karate has led to success as the owner of a car dealership. Inevitably though, the resurgence of Cobra Kai leads to a series of conflicts between the two rivals.
However, the drama of Cobra Kai goes far beyond Lawerence and LaRusso. The show also follows a number of younger, high school-aged characters. They include Lawerence’s son, Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan), Lawerence’s karate pupil Miguel Diaz (Xolo Mariduena), and LaRusso’s daughter Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser). These teens are forced to navigate conflicts between Johnny Lawerence and Daniel LaRusso as well as conflicts with one another.
So far, each season has been met with praise from critics and fans alike. If Cobra Kai‘s success continues, it is likely that fans can expect to see further season renewals at Netflix.
