Hours after the Supreme Court blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson posted a video on X reacting to the ruling. The mayor welcomed the court’s decision and said it would help immigrant families feel more secure about their future in the country. His remarks, however, drew criticism from conservatives who argued that he should focus on problems in Chicago instead of weighing in on a national immigration debate.
In his post on Tuesday, Johnson claimed that the Trump administration had used immigration officers to spread terror among immigrant communities. He said the recent ruling would bring relief to vulnerable families across the country who had been living with “uncertainty” and “fear.”
“Today’s decision reaffirms a simple but fundamental truth,” Johnson stated. “If you are born in the United States, you are a citizen of the United States.” He said that his office would work to ensure that immigrant communities in his city feel protected and can build a future there.
“No family should have to wonder whether their child’s place in this country can be taken away,” the mayor said. “No child should grow up questioning whether they belong in the only home they have ever known. Chicago will always stand for the belief that every person deserves dignity, safety, and the opportunity to thrive.”
Netizens’ Reaction to the Chicago Mayor’s Remarks
The Chicago mayor has since faced backlash on X over his post. “What this has to do with the Mayor of Chicago is beyond me…,” one person wrote. Another asked, “Why do you have an opinion about this?” Someone else said, “YOU ARE A LOCAL MAYOR. THATS ALL. NOTHING ELSE. NO NEED TO CHIME IN. NO ONE CARED.” A fourth added, “Worry about that crime ridden city. Stay in your lane.”
Some also disagreed with the mayor’s stance on the court ruling, with one netizen writing, “No child should be born in the GREAT USA unless your parents are legal citizens.”
Others alleged that the Democratic Party was supporting policies that encourage illegal immigration for political gain. “With the city population shrinking, the CTU needs the illegals to pad the school attendance numbers so they can grift more dollars,” one commenter claimed. Another wrote, “Just another form of illegal immigration to secure votes and transform our country.”
The birthright citizenship ruling is not the only recent Supreme Court decision to deepen political divisions over immigration. Just last week, the court allowed the Trump administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status protections for thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants. The decision drew sharp criticism from Democrats and praise from many Trump supporters.
