Matt Ryan’s Jonathan Constantine is set to appear on The CW’s Arrow.
During the CW’s TCA press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz announced that the star of the now-cancelled Constantine, Matt Ryan, is set to guest star in episode 5 of season 4 titled “Haunted.”
Arrow’s EP Marc Guggenheim released a statement regarding Constantine’s appearance on Arrow. “We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.”
Season 4 of Arrow will debut more mysticism, as well as a new and sinister villain in Damien Dahrk, who will be the main antagonist this season and will be played by Neil McDonough. Dahrk is a member of the H.I.V.E. organization in the comics, frequent foes of Teen Titans and Superman.
The quote seems particularly worded, as it shows the CW has faith in Matt Ryan’s interpretation of the character. He also says “to bring John Constantine to arrow and the CW’s DC universe,” as if this episode is a test for fans. If the fans of Arrow enjoy Constantine’s appearance in this episode, which it sounds like he will be the main focus, then he may be integrated as a supporting or guest character on Arrow.
I don’t think they will completely revive the NBC show, but they could add him to a spinoff such as Legends of Tomorrow. Matt Ryan also seems to be a very charismatic person, something he has in common with Stephen Ammell, Brandon Routh, and Grant Gustin, all stars of Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash respectively. He seems like an actor they could easily market a show and role in DC’s interconnected television universe.
Arrow Season 4 debuts October 7th, 2015 on the CW.
