There are horrible mothers-in-law out there, and anyone would hope to avoid having them. These kinds of women usually go to extreme lengths to upset their kids’ partners. This is what a crazy North Carolina mother-in-law is doing. She has been mistreating her son’s wife ever since they got married, and now he can’t take it anymore. The last straw was a birthday gift his mom got for his wife. He shared a picture of the gift, which is a colorful hat with the word “Beachy.” Given his mom’s history with his wife, it was clear she meant something else: the curse word. Thankfully, the guy actually sides with his wife whenever his mom pulls off something like that. When he confronted her about the hat, she got defensive and called him the bad guy.
The North Carolina mom’s attempt to act innocent didn’t go well. Her son posted a picture of the hat with context and asked people whether his mom’s gift was actually innocent. Everyone agreed that she was calling his wife an expletive, but in a sneaky way. The hat wasn’t the only birthday gift; his mom also got her a wine glass. You might think that the wine glass would make the situation better, but it was broken at the bottom of the bag. Plus, his wife just gave birth, so she wouldn’t need a wine glass. When the son said that to his mom, she simply said, “Well she could drink tea out of it.” Yeah sure.
The guy’s mom didn’t even have a good explanation for why she picked this specific hat. She just claimed that it would be useful for the couple since they love the beach. This justification led her son to say that it is January and that they rarely go to the beach. The context he added only made it clear that his mom meant this hidden meaning. Her son then shared how his mom previously told his wife to leave him. In addition to this, earlier in his wife’s pregnancy, she told his mom that the smell of alcohol makes her sick. Guess what his mom did? She gave her son alcohol and even encouraged him to drink. “This is the first and only time they’ve ever encouraged me to have alcohol. They are a VERY STRICT no alcohol family,” he wrote.
There are other examples that make it clear that the North Carolina mom hates her son’s wife. During the pregnancy, his wife told his mom that she couldn’t eat deli meat. Instead of avoiding it, his mom went and bought them a giant charcuterie board for their anniversary. All these examples were enough to prove that the guy’s mom has it out for his wife. The only good thing here is that he made it clear in the comments that he would always pick his wife over his mom. Another downside, though, is that his mom kept acting like a victim when confronted, so he expected her to tell his father and sister not to speak to him anymore. Well, if they agree with what she is doing, then maybe this is for the best.
People Reacting to the Crazy North Carolina Mother-in-Law’s Gift
Since everyone agreed that the North Carolina mother-in-law didn’t have good intentions with the gift she bought for her son’s wife, the comments absolutely dragged her. For starters, one person wrote, “Your mom sounds like a horrible person. Hope you’re standing up for your wife, dude.” That was when the husband said he would defend his wife. Another person believed that the son would be better off without his mom in his life. “Sounds like you have your answer on how to move forward with your exclusion of her. Can you imagine how she will treat your child(ren) if she treats your wife this way,” they wrote. This made someone else add, “Or use the kids against the wife. I work in childcare and have seen this on many accounts from MILs.” She seems like the kind of person to do that.
Others encouraged the North Carolina man to play his mom’s game and treat her the same way. “Have your wife get her a matching hat that says ‘queen beach’,” one person suggested. Another person said, “I love the idea to lean into it! Get her a Grandma Beach hat, shirt, hoodie, mug, planter, etc. NEVER let this end!” If she didn’t mean anything by the hat, then she wouldn’t feel upset if she got similar gifts. Some people even left hat designs with sneaky meanings for the son to use.
Few also wanted him to take the high road, as someone said, “Buy your wife something nice and let your mom know that you replaced her gift with something appropriate that happens to be much bigger and better. Maybe mom will stop when it starts backfiring.” The wife definitely doesn’t deserve this treatment.
