After two years since Critical Role did a live show in their home city of Los Angeles, CA, they are returning to the stage to tell the story of The Search for Grog.
Critical Role has performed live in Indianapolis a few times and made their Broadway debut just recently. Each of those games carried on in their usual weekly fashion. But this one is unique. It will be a standalone story picking up a plotline that was left on the final episode of Campaign One. The first campaign followed the heroes known as Vox Machina. In the final episode that aired at the end of 2017, each of the characters’ storylines were resolved and wrapped-up in an epilogue-like fashion.
Goliath Barbarian Grog Strongjaw (played by Travis Willingham) decided to tempt fate one last time in this final episode. He pulled a card from the Deck of Many Things. This infamous Dungeons and Dragons item is known for creating reward or great regret upon the player that chooses to pull a card. The deck had been in Vox Machina’s possession for much of the campaign and had been mostly left alone due to the random nature of it. The card that Grog pulled in the final episode immediately transported him to the Plane of Pandemonium. Given that this was the final episode of the story and all the characters were level 19 or 20, Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer glossed over it, saying that eventually Grog was found and brought home.
Now fans can see the story played out in detail! The cast will be reprising the roles of characters from the first campaign, including Percy, Vex, Keyleth, and Scanlan. Travis Willingham will be playing a new character since Grog is lost, and Liam O’Brien will also be playing a new character (SPOILER) after the death of Vax’ildan.
The live show will be Saturday, January 19th, 2019 at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. This runs the same weekend as the Critical Role art gallery. VIP doors will open at 6 pm, an hour later an exclusive Q&A will happen with the actual show starting at 9 pm. VIP tickets are $250 and general admission is $70. Tickets are on sale this weekend here.
