First lady Melania Trump publicly called for ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over his “hateful” language after he referred to her as “an expectant widow” just days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was interrupted by an armed suspect in Washington, DC. During a Thursday parody of the event, the comedian joked about her marriage, stating, “Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
The joke did not age well after authorities stated 31-year-old Cole Allen rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton on Saturday, armed with multiple weapons.
The suspect opened fire and struck a Secret Service agent before being taken into custody.
The shooting led to the evacuation of the Trumps and Cabinet members in attendance, resulting in the cancellation of the dinner.
In response to the comedian’s remarks, Trump issued a post on X stating that his monologue was not comedy, arguing his “corrosive” words deepen the “political sickness within America”.
She further demanded action from the network, writing, “People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate”.
The first lady also labeled the host a coward, claiming he hides behind ABC, and questioned how long leadership will enable his “atrocious behavior”.
Critics Slam the Double Standard
The first lady’s demand for Kimmel’s cancellation sparked immediate backlash from online critics who mocked the perceived hypocrisy of her statement.
One observer directly parodied her demand regarding television access, stating, “wow, that’s so crazy because I think the president of the United States shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes every day to spread hate”.
Another critic highlighted the stark contrast between her complaint and her husband’s own rhetoric, pointing out that “‘A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.’ is a literal posting by her husband not even a month ago”.
A separate commenter bluntly dismissed her logic about who is allowed a public platform, writing, “People as stupid as your husband don’t have the right to run for office either, but here we are.“
Highlighting a past public controversy, another individual suggested a wardrobe-based retaliation, proposing a “Motion for JK to respond by wearing her green ‘I don’t care’ coat”.
