It’s the time of year when The CW orders pilots for potential new shows and Riverdale spin-off, Katy Keene, is amongst their number.
The spin-off promises to follow the exploits of Katy Keene, a model, actress, and singer with dreams of becoming a fashion designer in NYC. Part of the Archie Comics brand, the series-in-progress is being set in the universe that Riverdale started. Not much is know of the plot yet – or if any Riverdale characters will make cameos – but showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasta is pretty excited.
The #Riverdale universe expands! Thrilled to be bringing the adventures of Katy Keene and her New York pals to life! Extra-thrilled to be doing this with my pal Michael Grassi @thatthingofwhen! ❤️🧨💥💎💋💃🏻👠👛🧵👨🏻💻 pic.twitter.com/NsM82bv1AE

But Riverdale isn’t the only show getting a slice of spin-off action. The much-loved Jane The Virgin is also receiving a pilot order spin-off from The CW. Titled Jane The Novela, the series will be based on the fictional novels ‘written’ by Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez). Each season will equate to one of her novels. Gina Rodriguez will also narrate each one – appropriate since her character is the author.
Joining the duo of spin-offs is a new take on teenage detective Nancy Drew. This reboot is penned by The OC‘s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The series will take place the summer after Drew’s high school graduation. Instead of going to college, a murder investigation keeps young Drew back another year and woven into a deep mystery. There have been a few attempts to bring the character to the small screen in recent years but none of the pilots have been picked up. Given that Schwartz and Savage are the minds behind CW hits Gossip Girl and the Dynasty reboot, it’ll be interesting to see what they can bring to the table. Can they compete with a high-profile Riverdale spin-off?
And at that table may sit The Lost Boys. This reboot will take huge inspiration from the 1987 vampire movie starring Kiefer Sutherland. Set in Santa Carla, the new take explores the secret underworld of vampires. After their father passes away, two brothers move to the town with their mother. But the two siblings are drawn into the town’s seductive world of the undead.
