When the CW’s Batwoman returns for its second season in January 2021, don’t expect to see Kate Kane in the iconic Batsuit.
You’re not reading that wrong – The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Bruce Wayne’s cousin will be leaving the show with the actress who played her, leaving room for a new Batwoman to take up the mantle.
News of the casting change was known since the now-deleted post from the Batwoman Reddit page, which advertised a casting call. News came from Decider, saying that the producers of the show were looking to cast a character called Ryan Wilder to replace Kate Kane played by Ruby Rose. It seems THR has confirmed the rumor.
Ryan Wilder is a decidedly male-sounding name so it’s unknown whether this is a placeholder name until the actual reveal. All that is known is that producers are looking for someone who is “female, Mid-late 20s, any ethnicity”, while stating that “Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman.” The character is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.”
As to how the writers will deal with Kate Kane’s absence now that Ruby Rose has departed the show is currently unknown. Producer Marc Guggenheim has looked tot the positive side of things, saying that it is a “creative opportunity” for the Batwoman staff. So, we can only wait until new information reveals itself.
Rumors are plenty as to why Rose left the opportunity of a lifetime. Deadline previously reported that the actress couldn’t handle the challenges of starring full-time in a weekly TV drama. Previously, she had only acted in a nine-episode arc of Orange is the New Black, which didn’t require as much commitment due to not being a major role.
